MedicalResearch.com Editor’s note: Dr. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist frequently featured on CBS’ The Doctors as the skin maven on ABC’s Extreme Makeover discusses the recent announcement of the 20th Global Anniversary of Restylane.

MedicalResearch.com: Would you briefly explain what Restylane® is? What are the main indications for the Restylane® portfolio of products?

Response: Restylane is a non-animal, stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA), a unique patented HA stabilization technology which contains pure hyaluronic. The Restylane family of products can be used to design individualized treatments with natural-looking results and long-lasting effects. With 190 scientific publications and 150 clinical studies, and more than 3,000 patients in clinical studies, the Restylane family of products are safe and effective products that have been FDA approved based on extensive clinical data. Restylane® is one of the world’s most studied wrinkle fillers and has been used in more than 65 countries worldwide in over 28 million treatments.

The main indications for the Restylane portfolio products is to improve the overall appearance of the aging face. Whether you’re young or old, whether you have a fine line or wrinkle or a deeper fold there is a product in this portfolio that can improve the appearance of your face and reverse signs of aging.

MedicalResearch.com: What are some of the differences in the products? What are some of the advantages of Restylane® over other fillers? Are there significant side effects or patients for whom treatment might be contraindicated?

Response: There are subtle differences in the three products in the Restylane family which are reflected in the areas of the face where they are used and the manner in which they are used. For example, Restylane®, Restylane-L® and Restylane® Silk are the FDA-approved products for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years of age.

Restylane Silk was specifically studied in the FDA trial to show improvement of lines and wrinkles around the mouth (also known as “barcode” or “smoker” lines or “lipstick” lines) as well as subtle but aesthetically pleasing lip enhancement. Restylane Lyft is approved for restoring fullness in the mid face area giving a pleasing 3D projection to the mid face. It is also approved to correct and smooth the smile lines also known as the nasolabial folds which run from the nose to the corner of the mouth.

The difference between Restylane and Restylane-L is the addition of lidocaine to the Restylane. Then the difference between Restylane Lyft, Restylane-L, and Restylane Silk are the actual gel particle size. With Restylane Lyft being the largest and Restylane Silk being the smallest. This gives a lot of versatility to the Restylane family as depending on the particle size you can place the product in the area best suited for it.

For example, the mid face requires more support and structure and Restylane Lyft has been proven to be more efficacious and safe in the mid face area. Restylane-L can be used in the smile lines and any line or wrinkle on the face. Restylane Silk has been specifically studied in the perioral area to treat lines and wrinkles around the mouth as well as to provide lip enhancement. Some of the advantages Restylane has is that it has a higher G-prime, otherwise known as more lift, so it is able to support skin that requires more volume and a product that is firmer.

MedicalResearch.com: Would you also describe the benefits of the enhanced Restylane® syringe?

Response: The benefits of the enhanced Restylane syringe is that it is easier for the healthcare professional to inject, as it has enhanced ergonomics for the injections. It also has upgraded safety measures for enhanced anti-counterfeiting protection. I’m thrilled that the new syringe will be available to me in the second half of 2016.

MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Response: I think the trio of products provides me with the ability to treat the face in a comprehensive fashion addressing fine lines and wrinkles as well as volume shifts that we see with aging. I believe that beauty begins with this family of products and I have been thrilled to use it since its FDA approval in the United States because I feel that its safety margin is equivalent to the aesthetic results I can achieve using this product line.
