Response: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a debilitating disease that affects all aspects of a patients life. It is often associated with Graves’ disease and thyroid abnormalities. TED causes profound bulging of the eyes impairing vision, causing eye pain and facial disfigurement.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?
Response: The article details the use of teprotumumab, a human monoclonal antibody which binds and inhibits the IGF-1R (insulin like growth factor 1 receptor.) This drug was tested in patients with thyroid eye disease and found to effectively reverse the proptosis, inflammation and diplopia associated with the disease. The drug was rapidly effective achieving response in two doses or 6 weeks of administration. The drug was also well tolerated.
This study demonstrates that medical treatment with teprotumumab is effective at reversing the manifestations of disease, providing new hope for patients
