Medical Research: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?

Response: Moderate alcohol has repeatedly been linked to lower risk of developing diabetes, and among diabetics, those who drink moderately at at substantially lower risk for cardiovascular outcomes. However, there have been no long term trial of alcohol among diabetics. In this two-year randomized trial, we found that wine caused modest improvements in glucose metabolism and in blood lipid levels, with a somewhat greater benefit observed for red wine, for changes in lipids.

Medical Research: What should clinicians and patients take away from your report?

Response: Diabetic patients who drink wine in moderation can continue to do so, with the knowledge that it is safe and likely beneficial. Those who do not drink, but would like to drink in moderation and have no contraindications, could consider moderate wine consumption, with advice of their doctor.

Medical Research: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Response: Larger and longer trials, with clinical outcomes, would likely be very informative.
