Single Session of Exercise Can Boost Metabolism for Days

Response: There are considerable benefits to physical activity.  Our group is very keen on better understanding the mechanisms by which exercise influences neural circuit activity and how this relates to various metabolic outputs.  The current study suggests that even a single bout of exercise(1h) is sufficient to drive an activity profile in the brain that is beneficial for metabolism.  Moreover, this activity may persist for days after the exercise bout.  Thus, it doesn’t take much to drive and sustain the activity of these neurons; which could have long lasting beneficial implications on your own health.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: Our current study described an exercise induced cellular and synaptic reprogramming of neurons in the brain.  However, the key factors/signals between exercise and the changes we observed remain undefined.Our future work is focusing on the mechanisms required and sufficient to drive these changes.
