Few supplements have been studied as thoroughly as whey protein, and few are surrounded by as much gym lore. Scoop sizes, shaker rituals, the frantic sprint to the locker room to drink a shake before some imaginary window slams shut. Most of that is theater.

The evidence is fairly clear on the core question. Whey protein does support muscle growth, but not because it's special in some magical sense. It's a high-quality, fast-digesting protein that's rich in leucine, and it helps you hit your total daily protein target.
