Medical Research: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Dr. Haas: We used a new way to study Borderline Personality Disorder.  We studied the traits associated with this condition in healthy people not diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.  We found that people that possess more Borderline Personality traits exhibit reduced brain activity in parts of the brain important for empathy.

Medical Research: What should clinicians and patients take away from your report?

Dr. Haas: These findings contribute to existing models associating Borderline Personality with abnormal interpersonal social function.  One reason why borderline traits may affect the way people socially related to others, may be because of the way parts of the brain important for empathy function.

Medical Research: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Dr. Haas: Future research is necessary to investigate empathic processing in more real-life naturalistic settings.
