MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?

Response: One aspect is the dilemma between continuing to use dental amalgams and the perception that composite resins are not as durable.

We show that composite resin restorations can perform similarly to dental amalgams for the first 5 years. But the most remarkable is that composite resin failures may be related to certain individual risk factors, such as genetic variation.

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: That the time in which the dentist will take into consideration the individual genetic make-up is near. Genetic information may provide a tool to determine follow-up and recall periodicity, and delineate better risks regarding certain treatments.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Response: Investigators should rethink phenotypes they are studying, and should consider defining disease and risk based on longitudinal information.
