31 Dec How Have Payments to Cancer Doctors Changed Since Open Payments Program?
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Deborah C. Marshall, MD
New York University School of Medicine
New York, New York
MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Response: Tarras ES, Marshall DC, Rosenzweig K, Korenstein D, Chimonas S. Trends in Industry Payments to Medical Oncologists in the United States Since the Inception of the Open Payments Program, 2014 to 2019. JAMA Oncol. Published online December 30, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamaoncol.2020.6591
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: Overall, though, there has not been a dramatic shift in these interactions after the inception of Open Payments.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: Since we don’t see a dramatic change since Open Payments began, we know that more research is needed into how to translate transparency data such as those in Open Payments into action. Substantial evidence has long shown the undue influence these relationships can have. Looking forward, these transparency data offer an opportunity to the biomedical community to dis-entangle the relationships that are needed to advance science and health from those we must do without to ensure our independence from industry.
