What Is EMDR Therapy?

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR employs bilateral stimulation, which activates both sides of the brain, to help the brain organize and heal from adverse events. This stimulation involves tapping, rapid eye movements, and auditory tones. EMDR therapy is based on the idea that when a traumatic event occurs, the brain's natural information processing system becomes "stuck", leading to unprocessed memories that continue to cause distress. EMDR works by helping teens reprocess painful memories in a safe and controlled environment over multiple sessions. During EMDR sessions, an EMDR therapist guides you through recalling traumatic experiences while engaging in bilateral stimulation.
