MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?

Response: Testosterone replacement therapy is increasingly being prescribed for the treatment of non-specific symptoms among aging men. However, there are concerns regarding the cardiovascular safety of testosterone replacement therapy in aging men and warnings have been issued by health agencies.

MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?

Response: In this population-based cohort study of men aged 45 years or older with low testosterone levels, we found that use of testosterone replacement therapy was associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack and myocardial infarction compared with non-use. The risk was highest in the first two years of use and decreased thereafter.

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: Based on the results of our study and from prior studies, the potential harms of testosterone replacement therapy should be weighed against its expected benefits when considering this treatment in aging men.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: Further large observational studies should be conducted to reaffirm these results and to further delineate the risk in patients with different baseline cardiovascular risk.
