MedicalResearch.com: What is the mission of Stem Cell Institute and Neobiosis?  

The Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami was established to capitalize on pioneering work in the use of adult stem cells for the repair of malfunctioning human organs. The goal of the Institute is to find new treatments for heart disease, neurological disease, bone disease, diabetes, cancer, eye diseases, and other chronic, debilitating, or incurable diseases.

Neobiosis is a privately-owned biotech company dedicated to the manufacture and development of regenerative tissues, cells, and the secretome from perinatal sources. https://neobiosis.com/MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings of some of your studies including- – Use of Acellular Umbilical cord-derived Tissues in Corneal and Ocular Surface Diseases and your study of neonatal mouse hearts?  

Response: Our main findings indicate that aged and damaged tissues can be supported to repair and regenerate by exposure to youthful biochemical signals derived from perinatal tissues, cells, and the amniotic fluid secretome.

MedicalResearch.com: Is this phenomenon of regenerative ability of fetuses akin to their ability to heal the skin without scarring? 

Response: Exactly. A fetus in utero retains a complete ability to repair tissue due to the pro-growth environment in which it is located. Our research is demonstrating that this ability can be transferred to a third party, which is something well described in the scientific literature regarding experiments of heterochronic parabiosis. In these experiments, the blood or plasma from young laboratory animals is able to confer youthful regenerative abilities in aged animals.

MedicalResearch.com: How could your work improve the outcomes of ‘Long-Covid’ patients? 

Response: Much of the damage associated with Covid-19 infection results from the so-called “cytokine storm”. Extracellular Vesicles found in Amniotic Fluid (AFEVs) called “cytosomes” are potent immune modulators capable of reducing the ability of immune cells to express pro-inflammatory cytokines, which we hope to demonstrate can eliminate cytokine storm and other inflammatory conditions. Our upcoming research paper will describe this science. 

MedicalResearch.com: What is a secretome? What conditions are they important to?

Response:  A secretome is the complete secretory product of a group of cells, which can include extracellular vesicles, nanoparticles, exosomes, growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, soluble receptors, etc. This is how cells and tissues communicate with neighboring cells and tissues to maintain homeostasis and facilitate the repair and immune modulation.  Secretome signaling is how the body stays healthy and how it responds to injury by activating repair

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: That young individuals have a much greater capacity to repair tissue compared to older adults. Our inability to repair and regenerate is responsible for the symptoms of aging. Our research, and the research of others in this field, is demonstrating that the ability of the young to repair is transplantable to older individuals and we can do so by transferring the secretome found within the amniotic fluid.
