Assistant Professor of Neurology

Rhode Island Hospital Stroke Center, Staff Neurologist

Medical Research: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?

Dr. Yaghi: In this study, we pooled data from 10 stroke centers across the country to investigate the treatment and outcome of post thrombolysis hemorrhage in acute ischemic stroke. This study included 128 patients and showed that the treatments used were not effective in improving the mortality related to this condition.

Medical Research: What should clinicians and patients take away from your report?

Dr. Yaghi: Shortening time to detection and treatment of post-thrombolysis hemorrhage as well as investigating more aggressive therapeutic approaches may be necessary to reduce mortality associated with this condition.

Medical Research: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Dr. Yaghi: Collaborative efforts from stroke centers nationwide are needed to investigate treatment strategies that improve the outcome of this life threatening complication of intravenous thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke.
