19 Aug Why Are So Many Modern Men Single?
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Menelaos Apostolou PhD
University of Nicosia
Cyprus
MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Response: In this study I analyzed 6794 responses from a recent Reddit thread on why men were single, and I classified them in 43 reason categories.
Among the most frequent reasons that men indicated for being single included poor flirting skills, low self-confidence, poor looks, shyness, low effort, and bad experience from previous relationships.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: The environment in which mating takes place today is drastically different from the respective environment some generations ago.
This change came recently in evolutionary terms for our evolved mechanisms involved in mating to be able to adapt to the modern conditions, resulting in several individuals facing difficulties in attracting and retaining a partner. Some of these difficulties such as poor flirting skills have been identified here.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: Singlehood is a widespread phenomenon, but there is limited research in the area. Future studies should attempt to investigate further the reasons that drive people to be single in different cultural contexts. Future research needs to investigate also the prevalence rate of involuntary singlehood i.e., how many of those who are single are so because they face difficulties in attracting a partner.
MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Response: Being without an intimate partner is increasingly common in Western societies. Considerable more research is required in order to understand its causes and the psychological impact on those who are single.
