MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: Ischemic heart diseases are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the USA. Also, there exists alarming ethnic disparities in mortality rates following acute myocardial infarction. To this effect, significant efforts have been deployed over the years to curb its burden and reduce extant disparities. It is in this light that we set out to analyze general and ethnic specific trends in acute myocardial infarction related age adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) in the entire USA from 1999-2020.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?
- There has been a significant decline in mortality following acute myocardial infarction across all racial groups in the USA, averaging -5% decline annually from 1999 – 2020
- Disparities between Blacks and Nonblacks has greatly reduced, from 18/100,000 in 1999 to 8/100,000 persons in 2020.
- An unusual uptick in AAMR in 2020 may be explained by the COVID epidemic but requires close monitoring

Response: This is encouraging news to all involved in the prevention of and care for patients presenting with myocardial infarction. This should serve as a motivation to all parties to continue the good work they have been doing.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a results of this study?
Response: While disparities have significant narrowed, we need to continue the work on eliminating all disparities as well as driving down the burden of ischemic heart disease to as low as reasonably achievable. To this effect, further investments, and dedicated research work to pinpoint areas of weakness and strengthen them would be a stitch in time.
