MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: Persons with atopic dermatitis have a number of risk factors for osteopenia and osteoporosis, including systemic atopy and inflammation, being less physically active and using a lot of topical and/or systemic corticosteroids. We aimed to determine whether adults with atopic dermatitis in fact have higher rates of physician-diagnosed osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Response: Mature adults (age ≥50 and ≥70 years) with atopic dermatitis had higher likelihood of osteopenia and/or osteoporosis in two different cohorts.

Response: Atopic dermatitis patients may benefit from increased screening for osteopenia and osteoporosis, and increased use of non-steroidal treatment options.
Some simple and conservative suggestions that could reduce their risk, include increasing physical activity, maintaining adequate weight-bearing activity and adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.

Response: Future studies are needed to understand the particular role of atopic dermatitis treatments in the development and prevention of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
