Response: Rates of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been increasing worldwide. In parallel with this, fructose consumption has increased.

This study demonstrates that feeding high levels of fructose worsens intestinal inflammation in mouse models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This fructose-induced worsening of disease is mediated through effects on gut bacteria. What should readers take away from your report?

Response: Diet could have an important impact on inflammatory bowel disease patients, with fructose having a potentially harmful role. What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: Future work entails developing interventions to reduce the pro-inflammatory effects of fructose to both lessen disease severity and decrease the risk for developing colitis-associated colon cancer. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Response: Dietary recommendations are lacking for inflammatory bowel disease patients. This research has the potential to provide guidance for dietary choices, with the goal of reducing disease.
