Mediterranean Diet in Post Menopausal Women Linked to Better Bone Health Interview with:
Bernhard Haring, MD MPH
Department of Medicine I
Comprehensive Heart Failure Center
University of Würzburg
Germany What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?

Dr. Haring: The primary aim of this study was to examine the association between adherence to a diet quality index constructed on the basis of dietary recommendations or existing healthy dietary patterns and bone outcomes in a large population of postmenopausal women.

We found that higher diet quality based on a Mediterranean diet may play a role in maintaining bone health in postmenopausal women. What should clinicians and patients take away from your report?

Dr. Haring: The average woman should follow a healthy lifestyle which includes adopting a healthy dietary pattern, e.g. a Mediterranean dietary pattern, and being physically active. To this point, unfortunately the US as well as other health care systems largely ignore nutrition and lifestyle measures in favor of pharmacology although organizations such as the American Heart Association or the 2015 US Dietary Guidelines provide detailed suggestions and advice.

Integration of the Mediterranean diet and related dietary patterns into medical practice has the potential to significantly improve well-being. What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Dr. Haring: Future analyses should among other things investigate specific dietary components and focus on different study populations. Thank you for your contribution to the community.
