MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?

Response: We knew of toilet stools from popular culture and wanted to study this in a scientific way. This is something that patients, family and friends always ask about and we wanted to start the process of assessing it more rigorously to see if they are beneficial.

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: The initial indication is that toilet stools have a positive effect on defecation and can improve feelings of bowel emptiness and reduce straining with bowel movements and time for defecation. This may be a non-pharmaceutical avenue to improve satisfaction with bowel elimination.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: It is important to note that this study was performed on volunteers without gastrointestinal problems. This study should be replicated in patients with chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and hemorrhoids to see if benefit is seen in these often hard to treat conditions. And, as always, replicating this study in a larger and more diverse population would be beneficial.

Disclosures: Squatty Potty LLC provided the toilet stools for the study, but was not otherwise involved in the process.
