MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Dr. Pandey: Previous studies have reported an underutilization of guideline based heart failure therapies among patients with heart failure (HF) and end-stage renal diseases. However, it is not known if the proportional use of these evidence-based medical therapies and associated clinical outcomes among these patients has changed over time. In this study, we observed a significant increase in adherence to heart failure process of care measures over time among dialysis patients with no significant change in clinical outcomes over time.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Dr. Pandey: Our study highlights the improvement in utilization of evidence based therapies and quality of care among heart failure patients on dialysis over the past 10 years. However, despite these improvements, HF patients with dialysis continue to have lower utilization of evidence based therapies as compared with those with normal kidney function. Thus, more work needs to be done in this field to improve the quality of care among heart failure patients on dialysis.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?
Dr. Pandey: Future studies are needed to identify strategies that may improvement in utilization of evidence-based therapies and clinical outcomes among heart failure patients with end-stage renal disease.
