MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Response: Many people go to emergency departments seeking care for their eye problems. We wished to investigate which factors are associated with the involvement of ophthalmologist consultants in the care of these patients and whether any disparities exist.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? What should readers take away from your report?
Response: We found that ophthalmology specialists were consulted for management of almost 40% of patients with eye problems in the University of Michigan adult emergency department. Black patients and those who preferred a non-English language were less likely to have an ophthalmology consult.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: Future research could include investigation of the types of eye symptoms and complaints that bring people to emergency departments and how those complaints are associated with the likelihood of receiving an ophthalmology consultation. Of note, the associations we found do not prove a causative relationship.
