MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?

Response: Previous research suggests aspirin use lowers risk of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC), but much less is known about a potential influence of aspirin use on survival after being diagnosed with CRC. 

MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? 

Response: Long term aspirin use before diagnosis of colorectal cancer was associated with lower chance of dying from CRC. Aspirin use was also associated with lower odds of being diagnosed with distant metastatic CRC, possibly through inhibition of platelets.

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: These results add to emerging data that suggest a potential benefit of aspirin toward primary or secondary cancer chemoprevention. While these results suggest a benefit in terms of survival, colorectal cancer patients need to weigh these benefits with potential risks, including intestinal bleeding, from aspirin use. CRC patients should discuss these issues with their physicians.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: There are a few randomized, controlled trials on aspirin among colorectal cancer survivors that are ongoing. We need those results to make more definitive conclusions.
