MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?

Response: Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) is an useful tool for studying the upper airway dynamic in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), and it’s crucial for the therapeutic choice (especially for non ventilatory treatment, such as surgery). The main limits of DISE are the lack of standardization of procedure and the low inter-observer reliability among non-experienced ENT surgeons.

MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?

Response: Our implementation of  Drug-induced sleep endoscopy with online cardiorespiratory monitoring (DISE-PG) is safe, feasible and easily reproducible. It allows a better comprehension of the breathing pattern during DISE, outdoing the limit of a direct, single-level visual observation, and provide a better overview of nonobstructive respiratory patterns. Moreover, DISE-PG results are easily comparable in different patients and the the exam be evaluate in a offline setting by a multidisciplinary team (i.e. ENT, neurologist, pneumologist).

MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: The evaluation of upper airway dynamic in sleeping OSAS patients play a key role in the therapeutic choice. Drug-induced sleep endoscopy-PG is an original implementation of the standard DISE procedure with the online monitoring of the cardiorespiratory parameters (the same recorded during diagnostic polysomnography). DISE-PG is more standardized than DISE and accurate in identifying the obstructive events; the results are easily comparable among studies; and DISE-PG may be evaluated in a off-line setting by different specialists.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Response: DISE-PG procedure might play an essential role in clarifying the different endoscopic scoring systems proposed for Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (i.e. to date there is a lack of agreement about the better endoscopic scoring system), and the increased standardization of the procedure may give more reproducible results in scientific papers.
