16 May Age of Solid Food Introduction To Babies Not Linked With Childhood Obesity
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Chloe Barrera MPH
ORISE Fellow
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Response: Previous studies have been inconsistent in whether introduction of solid foods to babies before 4 months may be associated with later obesity. In our analysis of more than a thousand babies followed through the first year of life and contacted again at 6 years, we did not find this association.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: Regardless of an association with obesity, it is still not recommended to introduce solid foods to babies too early. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends solid foods should be introduced at about 6 months.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?
Response: Studies with more frequent measures of obesity, and different types of measures, may help us understand this association better.
MedicalResearch.com: Thank you for your contribution to the MedicalResearch.com community.
