15 Mar Higher Income Students Overrepresented in Medical Schools
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Arman A. Shahriar
Medical Student, University of Minnesota Medical School Research
Consultant, HealthPartners Institute
MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: In recent years there has been a significant focus on the diversity of medical students, but to date, most work has focused on ‘visible’ forms of diversity; such as race, ethnicity and gender.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?
- High-income students are overrepresented in medical school, both overall and within each racial and ethnic group
- Black and Hispanic students remain underrepresented overall in medical schools, but high-income Black and Hispanic students are markedly overrepresented — even more so than their high-income white and Asian counterparts
- Low-income students are underrepresented across the board, with the exception of select subgroups of Asian-identifying students.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: Socioeconomic diversity is a critical missing component of the diversity conversation; the fact that medical education is increasingly only accessible to the rich is a very reasonable explanation for the prominent racial/ethnic diversity gap
