13 Jan Clinicians Found To Have Inadequate Training in Transgender Health

MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: The awareness of transgender healthcare issues has increased, leading to improved coverage of both hormonal and non-hormonal therapies. In endocrinology practices, there is an increased demand for providers who are competent in these areas. We wanted to assess the current status of knowledge and practice in transgender health amongst our current and future endocrinologists.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?
Response: Our research suggests that both trainees and providers are not receiving the adequate transgender training and exposure needed to meet increased patient demand. Specifically, only 72 percent of endocrinology fellowship programs teach transgender content, and 80.6 percent of clinicians have not received training in transgender health.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from this report?
Response: We have identified barriers, and provided recommendations on how we can educate our current and future endocrinologists to ensure that the needs of our transgender patients are met.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?
Response: More surveys on specific provider populations e.g. Pediatricians and international clinicians. I would like to see better endocrinology fellowship curriculum development through the use of online material to overcome the barrier of low faculty expertise.
