03 Feb New Sleep Apnea Algorithm Evaluates Quality of Life
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Dr. Jonathan R. Skirko, MD , MHPA, MPH
Assistant professor
Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology
University of Utah Health
MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: Obstructive sleep apnea is a common problem that that impacts the lives of many people. Understanding treatment effectiveness is important and Health-State Utility is a standardized way of assessing quality of life. Before this study, we didn’t have a way of measuring quality of life in this population in this important way.
You have to accurately measure something before you can improve it.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?
Response: This study developed a new way of assessing quality of life in patients with sleep apnea that will allow comparisons across populations and ultimately allow more precise measurement of quality of life in cost effectiveness studies. This will allow clinicians and researchers alike to better major Health state utility and sleep apnea patients.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: The health-state utility scoring developed will improve accessibility and use of economic evaluations in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: When evaluating patients with obstructive sleep apnea, be sure to assess their quality of life. Even though their sleep apnea severity may not be the worst , their quality of life may be severely affected by their sleep apnea.
MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Response: Be on the lookout for our next study looking at the improvement in health state utility with different treatments will be coming out soon.
