MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings?
Response: We made the observation in clinical practice that port wine stain birthmarks can be safely and effectively treated in early infancy without the need for general anesthesia. This observation is particularly important because of the FDA warnings regarding multiple exposures to general anesthesia under the age of 3 and the potential impact on neurocognitive development as these patients require multiple treatments.
MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?
Response: This is the largest study to date on children under the age of one. 26% of the babies achieved complete clearing and 67% of the patients had more than 75% clearing. No scarring or pigmentary change was noted. More complete and rapid clearing than one see in older patients was noted supporting the concept of early intervention.
MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: Port wine stain birthmarks can be safe and effectively treated in infancy without the need for anesthesia with more complete and rapid clearing that one see in older patients.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: Follow up of these patients with additional treatments beyond the age of 1 to assess further improvement or clearing.
Disclosures: I am on the Medical Advisory Board and Investigator for Candela Laser Corporation.
