MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are inflammatory diseases that share common clinical manifestations, genetic susceptibility, and immunologic features. For example, both diseases have similar clinical manifestations in the skin and gut, characterized by sterile abscesses in perineal and inguinal areas, scarring, and sinus tract formation. Both diseases have been associated with an increased prevalence of spondyloarthropathy, have common risk factors (smoking and obesity), and respond well to tumor necrosis factor-inhibitors. Some studies have suggested a link between HS and IBD, but data on the association of HS and IBD remain inconsistent and unclear. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the association of hidradenitis suppurativ with IBD.

Response: We included 5 case-control, 2 cross-sectional, and 1 cohort studies with a total of 93,601 participants. Our study showed the evidence from case-control and cross-sectional studies indicates that patients with hidradenitis suppurativa had 2.12-fold odds of Crohn disease and 1.51-fold odds of ulcerative colitis when compared to controls. Two case-control studies found patients with HS had increased odds of IBD (2.16-fold and 10.0-fold). One cohort study found patients with HS had 5.6-fold hazard ratio of IBD (P < 0.002).

Response: This study provides evidence to support the association of hidradenitis suppurativ and inflammatory bowel disease, and suggests that consultation with gastroenterologists should be sought when patients with hidradenitis suppurativ presents with gastrointestinal symptoms, e.g. recurrent abdominal pain, bloody stool, and body weight loss.
MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: While our meta-analysis provides the evidence to support the association of HS and IBD, there are some limitations. For example, no studies examined the association of severity of HS and IBD, and paucity of studies were from Asia. More studies, in the future, are warranted to confirm if HS is associated with IBD in Asians or other ethnic groups.
